The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition, Volume 2: Adolescents and Transition Aged Youth—the first of its kind in youth addiction and mental health care—is scheduled for release in spring 2026. This groundbreaking resource meets an urgent national need by providing developmentally specific guidance for identifying risk, determining the appropriate level of care, and coordinating treatment for young people.

Led by experts from The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and Hazelden Betty Ford, this 101‑level session explores how the forthcoming edition addresses the changing landscape of youth and young adult substance use and mental health care—and why these shifts offer renewed hope for improving long‑term outcomes for young people.

You’ll develop a baseline understanding of the core principles guiding the aspirational vision of care for adolescents and transition‑aged youth, while gaining clarity on key details surrounding the release of the criteria and the supporting training opportunities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand why adolescents and transition‑aged youth require developmentally distinct assessment and treatment approaches rather than adult‑oriented care.

  • Examine family engagement and how family‑driven, youth‑guided care transforms outcomes.

  • Identify best practices for prevention, early intervention, and integrating mental health treatment for co‑occurring conditions in young people.

  • Explore how the Fourth Edition promotes a model of care that integrates services across health care, schools, community programs, family systems, and juvenile justice.
